Memorial Students Offering Support (SOS)

Duties

Students Offering Support (SOS) is coming to Memorial University for the '12-'13 school year and we are on the hunt for the best student leaders to run the organization. As the chapter president, you will be the driving force behind your local and global impact:

• Raise Marks: We help student locally by running 3-hour group review sessions ?Exam-AIDs? for various university courses, helping first year students prepare for exams, right when they need it!
• Raise Money: From your Exam-AIDs, by charging a $20 donation to attend a session, you have the opportunity to raise as much as $100,000 in 1 year for a development project in rural Latin America.
• Raise Roofs: With the funds raised throughout the year, your team will work with one of our NGO partners to devise, coordinate, and actually build the chosen project on a two-week volunteer outreach trip at the end of each year!

Students Offering Support is one of the largest University student groups in Canada, with chapters on 26 Universities. With more than 1600 active volunteers who taught 20,000 students this year, SOS raised $300,000 for 30 development projects built by volunteers this summer!

Your position’s primary responsibilities will include:

• Creating your own lecture-style presentation based on the material that is provided to you by the Course Coordinator
  • Make sure to tailor the package to your presentation style with the use of a PowerPoint presentation or your own notes for blackboard/overhead use
  • Use previous questions/past exams to prepare lecture and package
  • Course Coordinator is responsible for creating the material; Tutor is responsible for presenting the material in a proper and customized manner
• Assisting Course Coordinator in compiling teaching/take-home course packages for students
  • Include any visual presentations (i.e. PowerPoint slides) used during the session, additional practice questions with answers and anything else that would be valuable in preparing for the exam
• Maintaining the student’s attention in an engaging and interacting way during the Exam-AID review session; confidently responding and answering any questions “on the spot”
• Holding 2-3 Exam-AID review sessions during midterm and final examination periods
• Constantly improving your teaching style and presentation of material based on feedback received from students after attending your sessions
• Maintaining regular communication with Course Coordinator and VP Logistics

Qualifications

As a Tutor, you are responsible for teaching the course material covered in class to students attending your Exam-AID review session.  You will be explaining the main concepts that will be tested on the upcoming exam and ensure students have thoroughly understood the content.  To excel in this position, you must possess a passion for teaching and be able to effectively communicate with peers. You must have also taken the course previously and excelled in it, gaining a good understanding of the content.
