This year's theme is Volunteers: Passion, Action, Impact.
The Community Sector Council NL and the 2012 Volunteer Week Committee kicked off Volunteer Week celebrations at the CLB Armory in St. John’s, on Sunday, April 15. Local musician, Dan Dillon set the tone as the sound of his acoustic guitar mingled with excited guests as they arrived for the evening’s festivities.
People from in and around St. John’s came together to show their appreciation, and say ‘Thank You’ to the organizations and volunteers who help to enrich our lives every day, and help make our communities better places to live.
Bernard Davis of the Church Lads Brigade (CLB), and this year’s Chair of the Volunteer Week Committee, introduced the host for the evening, Paul Raynes of VOCM. Penelope Rowe, CEO of the CSC, welcomed everyone to the event, followed by remarks from special guests, including the Honourable Nick McGrath - Minister Responsible for the Voluntary and Non-Profit Sector, along with Ron Ellsworth, Volunteer Week 2012 Honourary Chair.
Let the thank you’s begin!
Awards were presented to a wide range of volunteers, including individuals such as Madeleine White with the Association for New Canadians (ANC), our very own Michael Devine with the Community Sector Council NL, Paula Crocker with the Chalker Place Community Association. as well as groups such as the MacMorran Community Centre Board of Directors, and the Women’s Center Volunteer Group, to name just a few.
Vocalist Danielle Arbour entertained guests during the intermission, followed by the remaining presentation of awards, closing remarks and the cutting of the volunteer week cake. Closing out the evening were the Step Fiddlers, a group of talented young musicians who specialize in traditional Newfoundland and Labrador dance music.
