Bootcamp for Charities: Registration Closes January 31st!

This intensive two day event will feature lectures, guest speakers, a live chat with Canada Revenue Agency officials based on Ottawa and a special presentation by the Director of Client Interface and Services Division, Carl Juneau.

Mr. Juneau is the head of the division that is responsible for outreach programs to charities, including news releases, the Directorates website and call centre, webinars charity forms and other publications.   Mr Juneau will present “The Taxman and the Charitable Sector: A Charities Directorate Perspective” and also a question and answer period.  Although we hope you can attend the Boot Camp as well, you can register for this portion of the event separately by calling the Community Sector Council at 1-866-753-9860/709-753-9860. 

The event is free but seating is limited. The deadline to apply is 31 January 2012. CSC will try to ensure reasonable representation from both urban and rural areas in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Volunteers, staff, bookkeepers and accountants will find the sessions useful. Please check the agenda  of informative presentations. CSC will approve the registration list in early February and notify attendees.

    Spend 30 minutes learning how to calculate your fundraising ratio and what that means for your charity!

  • Effective fundraising, 10 best practices to keep you on track.

    This unit looks at 10 best practices that your charity can use to effectively fundraise while maintaining adherence to CRA requirements.

  • Ten steps to error free receipting.

    Approximately 89% of Canadian charities are involved in some form of inappropriate receipting practice. Don’t let this happen to you!

  • Checklist on compliance: moving the T3010 through staff, the board and on to CRA.

    Your board is ultimately responsible for correct financial reporting to Canada Revenue Agency. Tips on how volunteers, staff and board can work together on meeting that goal.

  • Are you on the right page? Line by line allocation of fundraising expenses for the T3010.

    Do you use schedule 6 for your financial reporting? This unit could be a great resource for you in terms of completing this form and the T3010.

  • Common errors on the T3010 related to fundraising costs: know how to avoid them.

    This unit showcases three factors which contribute to errors on lines of the T3010 reserved for fundraising. This unit will help set the record straight.

Carl Juneau is Director of Client Interface and Services Division, Charities Directorate, Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Ottawa. He is a lawyer with tax policy expertise. The Division is responsible for the Directorate’s outreach programs to charities, including the Directorate’s website and call centre, webinars, charity forms and other publications.

Steve Cino, currently an academic coach at Niagara College, previously worked in their Foundation and Alumni Relations Office. Steve has been involved as a curriculum writer and trainer with the Charities File and ACLE projects since 2006. After transitioning from his first career as a master teacher, consultant, and school administrator, Steve has been involved in leadership roles in community based initiatives in the Niagara Region.

Darlene Scott is a Senior Program Associate at the Community Sector Council (CSC) with more than 25 years of research, planning, and project management experience. She offers community-based training on governance issues, liability issues and volunteer management and recruitment. Most recently, Darlene has managed the Atlantic Charities Learning Exchange (ACLE) www.atlanticcharities.ca and overseen the technical requirements for the Charities File on Board www.thecharitiesfile.ca.
