SWASP Fact Sheets

Each year SWASP receives feedback from sponsors and students on the benefits of participating in the program.

In 2012, 299 students were placed with 285 organizations in 154 communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to complete their SWASP placements.

A summary of the program and feedback are available for 2003 – 2012.

In 2003, the Community Sector Council studied the perceived long-term impacts of SWASP participation. A random sample of 315 former SWASP participants was interviewed 3-6 years after their SWASP placements. It is clear from the responses that SWASP helped participants learn about voluntary, community-based organizations and their vital role in the community, develop an interest in community activities, learn transferable employment skills, and recognize the voluntary sector as a potential employer. The results of our study indicate a strong correlation between youth involvement with voluntary organizations and continuing engagement, and in particular, a tendency for early involvement to foster a willingness to assume leadership.
